St Matthias Church was originally built in 1654 during the Commonwealth Period. Berwick upon Tweed and the beautiful church at Staunton Harold in Leics are the only two other survivors of this era. It served as a chapel for members of the East India Company, who had an almshouse nearby for their employees. Today, it has a Victorian cladded exterior enclosing the original Puritan ‘preaching box’, with its Tuscan columns. The chapel was upgraded to the status of a parish church when it was rebuilt with a new tower in the 1860s. Its most notable feature (currently on loan) is a monument (by Flaxman) to George Steevens, who died in 1800. He was an editor of Shakespeare and member of Dr Johnson’s circle.
